Mayfield Village, OH – An ordinance enacted to make Mayfield Village the first community in Northeast Ohio to go wireless has been set into motion. The village has officially begun working on establishing an Internet connection via the region’s ultra-broadband community network, OneCommunity (formerly known as OneCleveland). The wireless project, dubbed, “OneMayfield” is being executed by the Mayfield Village-based communications solutions provider, Euphonyx. Euphonyx will establish WiMax (a way of securely broadcasting the Internet at extremely high speeds over a wide area) and WiFi (the technology that takes the broadcast signal and makes it available to individual users) connectivity to area businesses, public spaces and municipal buildings.
Mayfield Village mayor, Bruce Rinker noted, “Mayfield Village the first community outside of Cleveland proper to offer wireless Internet to the public. The entire village council agreed that these investments in our community will pay dividends in the near and long term for all its businesses and residents. By establishing a solid, technological foundation today, I believe that Mayfield Village will be well-positioned for redevelopment and enhanced government services like public safety and an enriched quality of living.” Mayfield Village is also home to the first library on the regional ultra-broadband OneCommunity network.
Euphonyx is first concentrating on mounting high performance WiMax transceivers on a large broadcast tower located in the center of Mayfield Village. In this initial phase, the OneMayfield Internet signal will be broadcast to the residents of Beta Technology Park, just off Route 271 and Wilson Mills in Mayfield Village. Tenants of the primary Technology Park facilities will also have wired access to the village-sponsored OneMayfield network, providing them with direct ultra-broadband connectivity to the region’s pre-eminent institutions and local governments.
In addition to the WiMax network, Euphonyx will operate strategically placed wireless hot spots, offering local users secure, high speed Internet access throughout areas like the downtown district, schools and parks. This second phase will let residents and visitors surf the web or get their e-mail wherever a signal is available.
The third phase of the OneMayfield project will provide a wireless “mesh” network to support integrated technologies for Mayfield Village’s police, fire and public safety departments. Ted Theofrastous, president of Euphonyx, pointed out that, “in addition to business benefits presented by this initiative, by bringing together public safety departments under one common network, response times can improve, greater efficiency can be realized and smart, integrated applications can be deployed across the entire mobile village workforce.”
OneCommunity is a nonprofit provider of community-based broadband networking services and community technologies to educational, governmental, research, arts, cultural, nonprofit and healthcare organizations. Subscribers to the network are connected to each other and the Internet backbone via a regional community network at gigabit speeds, typically hundreds of times faster than conventional Internet services. OneCommunity was founded by Case Western Reserve University, NorTech, Cuyahoga Community College, Cleveland State University, The City of Cleveland, Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority, ideastream and Cuyahoga County Public Libraries.
Euphonyx is an advanced communications solutions company founded by Panzica Investments, in partnership with Doan Pyramid. Euphonyx specializes in the design, installation and integration of communications and productivity improvement systems for business and local government.
The Beta Technology Park is a joint initiative between Mayfield Village and Panzica Investments aimed at revitalizing Mayfield’s core commercial district by building a nurturing, world-class environment for growing companies. Panzica Investments is working on this and a number of related initiatives as a part of the Red Room Revolution’s “No Place Like Home” program, which is aimed at facilitating and accelerating the growth of sustainable business in the Northeast Ohio region. The Beta Technology Park main campus offers smart spaces for companies that depend and develop technology. The Park provides reduced rental rates to qualified start-up companies, shared services (e.g., voice-over-IP and back office facilities) and, of course, secure, high speed wireless connectivity to its residents.
